My #1 Tip For Reaching Your Goals
As you may have realized by now, I'm a very goal-oriented person. (That might be a bit of an understatement.) I set goals for myself whenever I can find any excuse to do so. Daily goals, weekly goals, new year's goals. Fitness goals, relationship goals, money goals, reading goals. You name it, I've probably tried to turn it into a goal.
It's an interesting practice, too, because, well, that's just what it is: a practice. Setting and achieving goals is something we can do over and over again, and get better at each time. We can get stronger, faster, and improve our strategy.
And the goal-achieving strategy is exactly what I want to talk with you about today.
My #1 tip might not sound like anything particularly groundbreaking — and it's certainly not NEW. But, applied, it's the most fundamental thing to get you on track to reach your goals.
Here it is:
Each step in the RIGHT direction takes you closer to your goals than ten steps in the WRONG direction.
Moving in towards your goals, however slowly, will always enable you to reach them faster than moving in the opposite direction, however quickly you might go.
Perhaps you've heard the story of the pilot who, mid-flight, announced to his passengers, “Well, I have some bad news and the good news. The bad news is our radar and compass are broken, and we can't pick up a radio signal. In fact, we're hopelessly lost and flying completely blind. The good news is we're making great time!“
That would be crazy, right?
Yet so many people — especially entrepreneurs — think just like this. They're excited by how much they're accomplishing, how busy things are, and what great “progress” they're making… but they neglect the most important metric of success: are they headed in the right direction?
It was this thought that originally inspired me to found Startup Society. I saw so many aspiring entrepreneurs working endlessly, hustling night and day, giving their business everything they had.
In fact, I would go so far as to say most entrepreneurs feel a strong passion for their businesses, which motivates them to expend tremendous amounts of energy attempting to build it.
(Often, they even wind up sacrificing other things they cherish along the way, like time with their kids, personal goals, building relationships with friends, hobbies they love. But it seems “worth it” at the time — and it also seems like “tomorrow” their business finally won't demand such attention.)
But, if that's so, why is it that over 80% of new businesses fail within the first five years?
- It's not for lack of energy expended.
- It's also not for lack of time — the successful entrepreneurs had the same amount of time as those who failed.
- And it's not even for lack of information. We all know the internet doesn't allow us to have a shortage of that!
The real problem (the fatal problem) is that these entrepreneurs lack strategy. They don't have a good plan of WHAT they need to do to grow their businesses. They know where they're trying to go, but not what direction they need to go to get there any time soon.
Is this you? Do you have business goals, perhaps related to growing your audience, increasing your sales, or creating a better-run business? Do you know what you need to do to reach those goals?
If you're struggling to know what actions to take — or perhaps how to take them — then I invite you to consider joining Startup Society.
Each month, our members collectively work towards achieving a specific, tangible result in each of their businesses. A few examples?
> Attracting the RIGHT customers
> Growing their email lists
> Launching a strategic social media marketing campaign
> Creating passive income with a digital product
> Strategically expanding their team to be able to accomplish even more in the future
What do you want to achieve this year with YOUR business?
If you already know, then take a look at that list of Action Plans, and see if they match your goals. If so, Startup Society can help you by showing you HOW to reach these goals as quickly and effectively as possible.
On the other hand, if you're not sure what to do to grow your business in the first place, then Startup Society can help you by giving you direction, and showing you WHAT to do to grow.
That's not to say that Startup Society is for everyone, of course. It's only for those who are motivated entrepreneurs, interested in growing their online businesses, and willing to put in the necessary work.
If that sounds like you, then I invite you to join us! Here's the link to sign up now: https://www.gillianperkins.com/startup-society/
I promise focusing on taking the RIGHT actions will not only create better results but also save you time.
