this type of tagline makes you money
The most basic version of marketing your business is just explaining to people what your company does and to distill this message down into a bite-sized blurb, many entrepreneurs write a “tagline.”
A tagline is a very short explanation of what your company does – generally just a single sentence, or even a 2-10 word phrase. (This is much shorter than an “elevator pitch,” which might be 2-4 paragraphs in length.)
Your tagline probably won’t make or break your business – but a good one can certainly help your business succeed!
Now, to understand what makes a good tagline, you really have to first understand the whole point of the tagline – what the tagline is intended to accomplish.
In short, your tagline’s goal should be to help people understand:
what your company does
how your company could help them
whether or not they’re interested in learning more
With these goals in mind, it’s pretty easy to see where a lot of companies go wrong – they try to be “cute” or clever rather than focusing on being clear. Most companies that try to use a “cute” or clever tagline shoot themselves in the foot… because they wind up just being confusing.
By writing a CLEAR tagline, you’ll help people understand what you do, how you can help them, and whether or not they are interested in buying from you – and that means that a CLEAR tagline will actually make you money.

Here are a few examples of clear, money-making taglines in the real world:
Subway: “Eat Fresh.”
Geico: “15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance.”
BMW: “The ultimate Driving Machine.”
FedEx: “When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.”
How could you explain what your company does and/or the value of what your company does in 2-10 words?
One last thing – there is an exception to this rule! If your company’s NAME already clearly states what you do, then you can be a bit more creative with your tagline.
Examples:
PlayStation: “Live in your world. Play in ours.”
Pizza Hut: “No one out-pizza’s the hut.”
Bed Bath & Beyond: “Home, happier.”
The Container Store: “Where space comes from.”
Petco: “Where the healthy pets go.”
Burger King: “Have it your way.”
over to you!
Does your business have a name that makes it incredibly obvious what you offer? If so, what do you want to use your tagline to make prospective customers feel about your company?
Or, if your company is named Acme Inc… what do you do?? (Hint: the answer to that question should be the basis of your tagline!)
